Microscopic techniques can be used to elucidate\u00a0 membrane composition, organization and dynamics, as this reflects the\u00a0 functions of cells and their organelles, transport of membranes, transport\u00a0 across membranes and signaling.\u00a0 Because\u00a0\u00a0of the recent technological revolution in advanced light microscopy\u00a0 (super-resolution imaging, functional imaging of molecules) it is now\u00a0 possible to directly monitor the dynamics of (single) molecules in\u00a0 biomembranes in living cells.
